Ion beam-mediated plant transgenic technology is a new transgenic method developed in China in the early 1990s. The basic principle is that the low-energy ion beam can make the seed embryo cells etch and form multiple repairable micropores, and at the same time, the injection of positively charged ions is conducive to the entry of negatively charged exogenous genes into the cells to achieve genetic transformation, and then the use of cell totipotency to obtain transgenic regeneration plants.
In 2000, Wu Lifang et al. reported their research work on obtaining transgenic wheat by the low-energy ion beam-mediated method, and the exogenous genes used for transgenesis included the reporter gene Gus, the green fluorescent protein gene, the rice chitinase gene, and total soybean DNA. By 2001, the number of research papers on wheat transgenesis using the low-energy ion beam-mediated method reported in China reached more than 10, and then increased at a rate of 3 to 5 per year, and as of 2006, there were nearly 30 relevant reports, accounting for about 10% of the total number of reports on wheat transgenesis research.
